In this story, the unpleasant blacksmith Jack has been granted three wishes by St Patrick, and uses these wishes to trick the Devil when he comes to claim his damned soul. The first is to enchant a hammer to attack whoever holds it by beating them around the head, until commanded otherwise by Jack. The Devil is foolish enough to fall for the trick, and grants Jack another seven years before coming back for his soul.
