Mask of the Wolf

Last Halloween I was involved in a folk-horror themed event, and I made a handful of masks that were used as part of the performance. I included a couple of previous masks I had made – Grandfather Ogden and the Merrowman, and created three new ones – a Green Goddess, a Winter Demon, and a Wolf. And here is the Wolf, named Vrangar, all characters in the mythology of a nature-worshipping cult.

I didn’t want it to be too literal, but hopefully there’s something of the menace of the wolf about it, as well as communicating a sense of savage nature through the materials used. It’s made of paper mache, polyfilla, sticks and hot glue. Turns out that polyfilla is not ideal for masks as it’s quite brittle and is now looking pretty beaten up, but I do like the texture!

As this is post 666 it seemed quite apt for the subject to be quite evil.
