Ratscarrow Jack

My five year old son and I decided to make a scarecrow for the garden. We don’t get many crows, so it’s going to be an easy job for old Ratscarrow Jack. His head is made out of plaster bandage, which we wrapped around a balloon and then made as gnarly and vegatabloid as possible, and his body is cobbled together from various bits and pieces.

Autumn seemed to arrive this year the moment we switched from August to September, and scarecrows instinctively feel like an autumn kind of project, which may be a bit silly as I imagine the busiest time for scarecrows is sowing seeds in the spring.

Scarecrows have popped up several times in my previous projects, most notably here: Parliament of Scarecrows.

It has been fun to work on something a bit more 3D, so I’m feeling a bit motivated to do some slightly more sculptural stuff.
