Webs of Shadow

But still, she was there, who was there before Sauron, and before the first stone of Barad-dûr; and she served none but herself, drinking the blood of Elves and Men, bloated and grown fat with endless brooding on her feasts, weaving webs of shadow; for all living things were her food, and her vomit darkness.

Happy Halloween 2019 everyone!

My daughter thinks that her Halloween costume this year is Incy Wincy Spider. Little does she know that she is actually representing Shelob, the monstrous spider of Cirith Ungol, daughter of Ungoliant, who nearly brought the Ring quest to a sticky end when she captured Frodo.

I have to say a big thank you to my wife for sewing the legs on, as my own sewing skills did not live up to the task, and really the whole costume just wouldn’t exist without her. It was a nice chance to collaborate creatively a bit.

The spider eye headband didn’t work quite as well as I had hoped, but I still take delight in the fact that it is a bit weird and different.

It’s all definitely a bit of an improvement on last year’s Deep One costume, but my favourite is still her Crow goddess outfit from a couple of years ago.

We’re still waiting for the baby to arrive, but assuming that he won’t turn up in the next couple of hours, we are off later to do some Trick or Treating.
