This was supposed to be one of a series of cartoonish linocut prints of rabid dogs (or maybe more neurotic than rabid), representing various nebulous anxieties that sometimes afflict me.
Churchill talked of his depression as being a Black Dog and Nick Drake sings of the Black Eyed Dog. It’s a strange metaphor as dogs tend to be quite jolly, but I guess the Black Dog is a significant folkloric motif surrounded by dread, so perhaps it’s a symbol held deep in the human psyche. My dog is blue because I just bought some new blue printing ink from Cass Art!
Anyway, as a one off it feels a bit unsatisfactory and maybe a series would have a bit more impact, but it was actually very time consuming doing this so I’m not sure there’ll be another one for a while.
