Holy Ground

These appeared on a film I recently developed. They are just a few shots I took on my walk to work one morning, through Bournemouth’s beautiful gardens. I admit that after a few years of doing the same walk, I have got pretty bored of it, despite how amazing the gardens are.

But I remember that when the first lockdown started and everyone was confined to their homes pretty much, but I still had to go to work (armed with a letter of safe passage from the council, which is kind of crazy), the whole landscape seemed to change and become infused with a strange almost spiritual significance, something I had taken for granted, but which was this empty, abandoned haven amongst all the news of sickness and despair. That feeling is what these photos brought back to me.
