There is an exhibition on at the moment at the Courtauld Gallery of charcoal heads by Frank Auerbach. I haven’t been to it, but I would love to – these portraits look magnificent, like sculptures! And now I have been inspired to start drawing in charcoal. Well, I’ve a long way to go, but here are some early attempts.

I’ve had this page open in my browser since you posted it and I keep coming back to it… I don’t generally like faces as an artistic subject, but there is something absolutely fascinating about that first portrait – the lowered gaze is part of it, but the softness of the features and the utter delicacy of the mouth in contrast to the stronger marks on top… there is an atmosphere of melancholy that is captivating.

Thanks very much for the feedback, I’m delighted that something I created has had an impact, even if it was pretty much all purely by chance!
