Turnip for the Books

This is Bishop Turnip, the first in a planned series of scarecrow characters sculpted in polymer clay. I just wanted to try something a bit different and pour some energy into a bit more of a project. My Faces of Clay series has suggested that cartoony figures are probably a bit easier than trying to be realistic, and I’ve had the phrase The Parliament of Scarecrows rattling around in my head for a while.

I hadn’t quite expected him to turn out so x rated, but as he came together I realised that he is a grotesque figure, blasphemous and vile. He represents something unnatural, a sort of corruption of the natural order.

I can see I really need to brush up on sculpting and painting skills. My attention span is so short that I can never bring myself to focus on the finishing.
